Multifunctional Artefacts and Collocation

چکیده
There appear to be multifunctional artefacts of a type such that none their functions can attributed only some proper part the artefact. I use two examples allegedly this kind in what follows, one due Lynne Rudder Baker (aspirin) and another my own (a spork). The are meant make same point. discuss her aspirin example, since its discussion has entered literature, but without being dealt with satisfactorily. My example is, believe, more intuitive than aspirin, which introduced response challenge views, so will mostly rely on spork, especially at end paper, case. argue least those cases, if standard arguments for distinguishing between an object constitutes it sound, argument showing we might have taken single is fact case multiple single-function collocate. Or almost. further assumption needed these beyond constitution cases require, produce reasons accepting assumption.

I develop in this paper a conception of artefacts based on L. Wittgenstein's idea of family resemblance. My approach peruses the notion of frame, which was invented in cognitive psychology as an operationisable extension of this philosophical idea. Following the metaphor of life-cycle I show how this schematic notion of frame may be filled with the content relevant for artefacts if we consider ...

This paper contrasts the approach Thomas Edison used when dealing with his claim to have discovered a new force of nature, etheric force, to the approach he used to create successful inventions. It argues that he failed in this adventure into scientific theory making because an erroneous view of science led him to abandon techniques that made him America's most successful inventor. From this I ...
متن کاملModular Artefacts
Inspired by adaptive possibilities of agents in multi-agents system, we have developed the new concept of modular artefacts using intelligent building blocks (I-BLOCKS) [1]. This paper describes early a scientific research related to technical design, inheritable development and evaluation of a concept of neighborhood information awareness among I-BLOCKS allowing users to develop modular system...
